Harewood Memorial Gardens & Crematorium features several acres of beautifully landscaped memorial gardens. The gardens have been set apart for the placing of individual memorial plaques, with 3,000 rose bushes, all of which are show standard amongst an immaculate lawn setting. This project required a contractor who could be sensitive to the families who are represented within the grounds.

The scope of the project included the following

Construction of the new link road.

Footpath construction.

Installation of stormwater system.

Sumps linking pipework, stormwater 360 filter and the infiltration to ground system.

Located off Wilkinsons Road in Harewood, the Crematorium previously enjoyed access directly onto Johns Road (SH1). The recently completed Northern Motorway resulted in a service road being constructed immediately in front of the Crematorium, restricting access to the motorway and controlling entry via a slip lane. Unlike adjacent residential properties, access onto the service road would not be conducive for funeral vehicles and higher volumes of commercial traffic. Waka Kotahi’s solution was to have traffic exit the Crematorium via their own link road, rejoining Wilkinson Road through a roundabout, before finally merging with traffic on SH1.

Key Factors

Communications

Daily communications with the Head Gardener to understand scheduled services, with a 2-3 day outlook constantly being communicated between both parties.

Co-ordination

Co-ordinating all activities to avoid excess noise, disruption and vibration. We also utilised smaller rollers to ensure vibration wasn’t noticeable inside the crematorium.

Key Dust Capture

The erection of temporary screens to provide aesthetic visual barriers and help capture and contain dust that wasn’t suppressed by other means.

Sensitive Scheduling

To make sure that no funerals were interrupted, the careful scheduling of site deliveries and transportation of roading aggregates were planned around service times.
