The Groynes Park sits adjacent to the northern bypass Motorway on the Northwestern side of Christchurch.
As the bridge was situated in a prominent public area, it underwent rigorous scrutiny by all those who used it. Consequently, it was imperative to ensure that all work met exceptionally high standards. Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to achieving a polished finish were essential.
Furthermore, given the bridge’s location within a city park and the challenges posed by limited access for heavy machinery like cranes, it was necessary to construct the bridge in place. Replacement of the old bridge’s steel beams necessitated the installation of new beams as the foundation for the timber bridge. Without the means to employ Hiabs, cranes, or large excavators, our team had to devise a creative solution for transporting and positioning these beams across the 12-meter river span.
The solution materialised in the form of wheeled dollies, which facilitated the movement of the beams from the roadside to the construction site along an access track. We then utilised load skates and the existing old beams as a channel to carefully slide the new beams into position across the gap, ensuring that the painted finish on the new beams remained unblemished.
